“Admire the Distance”

To commemorate their September 26th show, Thematic is offering an original gig poster, commissioned and designed by Michael Laurence. The design draws inspiration from the vast treasure trove of early Factory design, and reflects wider influences including: Diego Velazquez, Hans Holbein, Raffaello da Urbino, Demetrio Paernio, Joseph Cornell, Mike & Doug Starn, Jean-Michel Basquiat, David Lynch, Karel Martens, Vaughan Oliver, and design legend Peter Saville.

Taking visual cues from several iconic Joy Division and New Order designs, this poster features an intricately textured composition that references themes of: light/darkness, rebirth, nostalgia, triumph over adversity, enlightenment, and the passage of time. The intended effect is a sanguine and luminous reflection of the past, present, and future.

This poster is special to me for many reasons. Joy Division, New Order, Factory Records, and Peter Saville have all had such an outsized influence on my life and career. Manchester 1978–88 will always be the soundtrack to my life.

This poster is offered in a strictly-limited artist edition of 75. Each is litho printed on premium 100# smooth uncoated cover stock. Prints measure 13×19 inches, and are hand-signed and numbered on verso. Packaged and shipped quickly and securely. Posters are sold unframed.
